Job seeking based on our professional goal was the subject we talked about on Wednesday 12 February, during the first of the three Believe In You workshops dedicated to the unemployed.
“Which is your professional goal?” That is the question I always ask job candidates and although it seems like a simple question it often leads to… freezing! I beggined Wednesday’s seminar with the exact same question asking the participants to ansewr me like I was their prospective employer. From the answers they gave me, I presumed that it was probably unclear to them so we moved one step forward.
The truth is that choosing which career path we want to follow is affected and at the same time affects many aspects of our life. For this reason we used a “Funnel” procedure examining separately 12 different factors like indusrty, work environment, area and others. By me asking questions about these factors and by using decision making tools, participants managed to come out with a more clear thesis about what the really want from a job position.
Many people believe that by chasing a lot of jobs they multiply their chances. Personally ,I see it as a matter of quality, not quantity. A person with a clear professional goal does not waste time asserting positions that don’t match his qualifications, he knows exactly the steps he has to follow in order to move closely to his dream job and he has an advantage in every negotiation.
The seminar came to an end with homework along with a much clearer goal I hope!
